Annapurna 1, the highest peak of the Annapurna Massif was climbed in 1950 by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal. Anapurna has 4 Summits, numbered in Order of height plus Annapurna South.
The range of sights around this Mountain Massifs consists of terrassed hillsides, dense jungle, humidbamboo clumps, canopies of cloud forest, dark woodlands and silent alpine glades.Higher up the land is barren and massive Mountains of snow and ice peer down.
Mediaeval Villages, Monastries with colorful prayer flags clinging to sheer cliffs, quaint farmhouses with Buffaloes, Goats and Chickens dot the landscape and women in brightly colored saris wash their clothes by the river, while excited children scurry across the fields to greet visitors.
The hills are inhabited by Brahmins, Magars, Chhetris and Gurungs.Thakalis, Manangis and others related to Tibetan ethnic groups are living in the high country.Despite the new dirt road all the way to Manang, the Annapurna Circut remains one of the great walks of our Globe.
Taking this counter clockwise tour, the circuit begins by trekking north through the Valley of the Marsyangdi Khola. Above Manang in crosses the Thorong La at a lofty 5416 m, then descends to the stony bed of the Kali Gandaki, a river born in Tibet. Where it passes between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, it has created the deepest valley on earth.
